Electric Current

Problem 3.172

A circuit consists of a source of a constant emf E\mathscr{E} and a resist ance RR and a capacitor with capacitance CC connected in series. The internal resistance of the source is negligible. At a moment t=0t=0 the capacitance of the capacitor is abruptly decreased η\eta -fold. Find the current flowing through the circuit as a function of time tt.

Reveal Answer
I=[(η1)E/R]eηt/RCI=[(\eta-1) \mathscr{E} / R] \mathbf{e}^{-\eta t / R C}
