Conductors and Dielectrics in an Electric Field

Problem 3.82

A round dielectric disc of radius \(R\) and thickness \(d\) is statically polarized so that it gains the uniform polarization P, with the vector \(\mathbf{P}\) lying in the plane of the disc. Find the strength \(\mathbf{E}\) of the electric field at the centre of the disc if \(d \ll R\).

Reveal Answer
E=dP/4ε0R\mathbf{E}=-d \mathbf{P} / 4 \varepsilon_{0} R
