Constant Magnetic Field, Magnetics

Problem 3.260

A conducting current-carrying plane is placed in an external uniform magnetic field. As a result, the magnetic induction becomes equal to \(B_{1}\) on one side of the plane and to \(B_{2},\) on the other. Find the magnetic force acting per unit area of the plane in the cases illustrated in Fig. 3.72. Determine the direction of the current in the plane in each case.

Reveal Answer
 In all three cases F1=(B12B22)/2μ0 . The force is direct ed to the right. The current in the conducting plane is directed beyond the drawing.\text { In all three cases } F_{1}=\left(B_{1}^{2}-B_{2}^{2}\right) / 2 \mu_{0} \text { . The force is direct ed to the right. The current in the conducting plane is directed beyond the drawing.}
