Kinetic theory of gases. Boltzmanns Law and Maxwell distribution

Problem 2.62

Modern vacuum pumps permit the pressures down to \(p\) \(=4 \cdot 10^{-15}\) atm to be reached at room temperatures. Assuming that the gas exhausted is nitrogen, find the number of its molecules per \(1 \mathrm{~cm}^{3}\) and the mean distance between them at this pressure.

Reveal Answer
n=p/kT=1105 cm3;l=0.2 mmn=p / k T=1 \cdot 10^{5} \mathrm{~cm}^{-3} ;\langle l\rangle=0.2 \mathrm{~mm}
