Problem 2.190

Water of mass \(m=20 \mathrm{~g}\) is enclosed in a thermally insulated cylinder at the temperature of \(0^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\) under a weightless piston whose area is \(S=410 \mathrm{~cm}^{2}\). The outside pressure is equal to standard atmospheric pressure. To what height will the piston rise when the water absorbs \(Q=20.0 \mathrm{~kJ}\) of heat?

Reveal Answer
2.190. \(h \approx \frac{(Q-m c \Delta T)}{p_{0} S(1+q M / R T)}=20 \mathrm{~cm},\) where \(c\) is the specific heat capacity of water, \(\Delta T=100 \mathrm{~K}, q\) is the specific heat of vaporization of water, \(T\) is its boiling temperature.
