Problem 2.135

Vessels 1 and 2 contain v=1.2v=1.2 moles of gaseous helium. The ratio of the vessels' volumes V2/V1=α=2.0,V_{2} / V_{1}=\alpha=2.0, and the ratio of the absolute temperatures of helium in them T1/T2=β=1.5T_{1} / T_{2}=\beta=1.5. Assuming the gas to be ideal, find the difference of gas entropies in these vessels, S2S1S_{2}-S_{1}

Reveal Answer
S2S1=vR(lnαlnβγ1)=1.0 J/KS_{2}-S_{1}=v R\left(\ln \alpha-\frac{\ln \beta}{\gamma-1}\right)=1.0 \mathrm{~J} / \mathrm{K}
