Problem 1.152

Two bars connected by a weightless spring of stiffness xx and length (in the non-deformed state) l0l_{0} rest on a horizontal plane. A constant horizontal force FF starts acting on one of the bars as shown in Fig. 1.40.1.40 . Find the maximum and minimum distances between the bars during the subsequent motion of the system, if the masses of the bars are: (a) equal; (b) equal to m1m_{1} and m2,m_{2}, and the force FF is applied to the bar of mass m2m_{2}.

Reveal Answer
1.152. (a) lmax=l0+F/x,lmin=l0;l_{\max }=l_{0}+F / x, \quad l_{\min }=l_{0} ; (b) lmax=l0+l_{\max }=l_{0}+ +2m1F/x(m1+m2),lmin=l0+2 m_{1} F / x\left(m_{1}+m_{2}\right), l_{\min }=l_{0}
